Smart Meters
In July and October of 2010 the Board of Supervisors sent letters to the President of the California Utilities Commission requesting that they immediately suspend deployment of Smart Meters by PG&E in Marin County until certain conditions regarding their safety and accuracy had been confirmed. There has been no response.
On January 4, 2011 the Board of Supervisors adopted an urgency ordinance imposing a one year moratorium on the installation of Smart Meters and related equipment in unincorporated Marin County. We have heard from many residents who are concerned about unanswered questions regarding Smart Meter performance, billing accuracy, customer health, safety, and privacy protection. We share those concerns.
It is important for the community to know that the passing of this ordinance is a political statement. The California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) has the authority over PG&E and installation of the meters -- and has stated that a resolution from a city, town or county prohibiting the installation of Smart Meters is not legally binding and will not be adhered to. While PG&E is not likely to adhere to the moratorium, the more jurisdictions that pass similar resolutions will send a strong message to CPUC Commissioners and PG&E.
